about

There's an old beggars' prayer in Yorkshire which is 'From Hull, Hell and Halifax, good Lord deliver me'. It goes back to the early seventeeth century and quite a few songs have been written using it. This is our take on it. Beggars were afraid of Hull because they were liable to be press-ganged, of Hell for obvious reasons, and of Halifax because there was the fearsome Halirfax gibbet - and early form of guillotine where anyone caught stealing goods over a certain value were summarily beheaded.
