about

At least one of my family was a Hull whaler. This song is about the last whaler to sail out of Hull: The Diana. In 1863 she got stuck for months in the pack ice in Baffin Bay and after a voyage that lasted for over a year managed to limp home, having lost almost half of her crew, including her captain, to starvation and scurvy. The song looks at it from the standpoint of a mother whose son is aboard.
